The Truth About Sedation

Fear – it holds us back from many things. Does fear prevent you from a healthy smile? There is a solution! Sedation helps many recline in the dentist’s chair with ease. It is a safe way to find the comfort needed to improve your dental health. Plus, sedation dentistry can be used for everything from complex procedures to basic cleaning.

Every mouth is different and the kind of sedation depends on your unique needs. Here are some options at South Shore Smiles:

  • Nitrous Oxide– Another name for nitrous oxide is laughing gas…but it’s not for laughs! It is a tool often used in dentistry as a way to reduce anxiety. The gas is administered through a nose mask and its quick effects are reversible. Patients mainly utilize nitrous oxide for relaxation, but also to reduce discomfort. Best of all, a driver is not needed to pick you up after your appointment.

  • Oral Sedation-Another option to calm those dental nerves is oral sedation. This type of medicine, taken by mouth, will make you feel relaxed during the procedure. You take the medicine when you arrive at the appointment. You would need a driver for this kind of sedation.

  • IV Sedation/General Anesthesia- If you are better suited to be placed under IV sedation or general anesthesia, Dr. Shieh works closely with a board-certified dentist anesthesiologist, Dr. Zak Messieha. He has specialized training using various medications to safely putting patients to sleep. A driver is needed after the procedure has been performed.
