Everything You Need To Know About Gum Disease

Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums affecting the bone that surrounds and supports your teeth. Gum disease is caused is caused by plaque buildup in the gums. If not caught and treated, gum disease can cause teeth to become loose and fall out or need to be removed.

The different stages of gum disease include Gingivitis, Periodontitis and Advanced Periodontitis. Gingivitis being the early stage of gum disease can allow you the chance to reverse the damage by brushing and flossing with a focus on the gum area. The second stage, Periodontitis, is the irreversible stage where the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place are damaged and dental care is needed. The third and final stage, advanced periodontitis, is when the fibers and bone are completely destroyed and you will need your teeth removed or they will fall out.

Gum disease can be reversed if caught early. Some things to look out for are red or swollen gums, bleeding gums, receding gums, pockets formed between the teeth and gum, and a constant bad breath or bad taste in your mouth.

Gum disease can be treated when caught early by being given proper brushing and flossing and can be prevented in the same way. You should also obtain regular dental check-ups and cleaning in order to have the plaque professionally removed from your teeth.
